First Responder
First Responder - 4 hour
Course Prerequisite: None
Course Length: 4 Hours
Medical Approval: No
Delivery Mode: Lecture 4 hours

Course Purpose: We try to provide the best environment possible for students to learn the didactic material and psychomotor skills to become certified as a First Responder by the American Safety and Health institute. We will be as fair as possible and give every opportunity for students to excel in the course. However, we also believe that students MUST be prepared to give the time and energy to the course by coming to class ready to learn and by participating in practice sessions; this means students will have read the assigned chapter prior to coming to class.
COURSE GOALS
The course is designed to instruct students to the level of First Responder, who serve as a vital link in the chain of the health care team. After successful completion of the program, the student will be capable of performing the following functions at the minimum entry level.
• Recognize the nature and seriousness of the patient's condition or extent of injuries to assess requirements for emergency medical care.
•Administer appropriate emergency medical care based on assessment findings of the patient's condition.
•Lift, move, position and otherwise handle the patient to minimize discomfort and prevent further injury.
•Perform safely and effectively the expectations of the job description.
The content of this course includes the following subject matter:
Overview of the human body
Medical-Legal-Legal Issues of EMS
Assessing Emergency Scenes and prehospital victims
Illness and Injury Emergency Care
Emergency Childbirth and Pediatric Emergencies
Emergency Services Operations
Course Instructional Materials: Video- ASHI First responder
Instructors: SETA instructor, with student to instructor ratio not to exceed 15:1
Course Handouts: ASHI first responder manual and other pertinent instructor created handouts
Participation Evaluation: Written evaluations from students regarding the effectiveness of the trainer, the training and the visual aids.
Written Exam: Yes with 75% grade to pass course
Practical Exam: Yes with minimum competencies to be satisfactorily completed to pass course
Retraining/Recertification: Required every two years
